Part 1: "The Mind of Christ" - Philippians 2

Opening Verse:
“For through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:16 NLT

Introduction:
Welcome to an amazing Sunday here at River of Faith! We are starting a new sermon series today I entitled Jesus Walks! In this series we will look at the examples of Jesus Christ on how to love when it's difficult, how to forgive when we are hurt, and how to still care for people who may disagree with us or see us as their enemies. The world that we live in today is very divided. The world that we live in is in desperate need of an example to follow. Where else should we go and who else should we follow other than the ultimate example of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the answer. He always was and He is, and will always be.

Main Pointers:

“Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”
Philippians 2:1-5 NLT

1. Selfishness is the poison that kills the unity even in the body of Christ.

A. The apostle Paul in the previous chapter talks about living the life to the fullest for the glory of Christ and to die is the ultimate destiny of a follower of Christ.
B. The reason behind this is because as a Christian or follower of Christ In everything that we do the goal and purpose of it is to become more like Christ in our attitude.
C. “For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better."
Philippians 1:20-21 NLT

2. Having the mind of Christ is the only true form of humility.

“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:6-11 NLT

A. There is no other humility outside the supreme example of Jesus Christ. People today like to think that they understand humility or have some form of humility themselves but when exposed in the light of who Christ was and is nothing can be comparable.
B. “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

3. We are called to be Christ-like not act as if we are Christ.

“It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives. They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News. Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me. But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice. For I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance."
Philippians 1:15-19 NLT

A. Maybe one of the hardest things to do as human beings is not to be selfish. We are inherently selfish in our ways.
B. You ever notice that once a child learns the word "mine" they start fighting over toys.
C. “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”
Philippians 2:5 NLT

Conclusion:
What does having the attitude of Christ mean to you? What does it look like as followers Jesus if day by day we desire to be more like Christ? Does it help heal the divide in our surroundings? Does it help people to see that Christ is truly Lord? Do you desire to have the attitude of Christ?
