Part 2: "The Lord is Very Patient"
2 Peter 3
Opening Verse:
“The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever.”
Psalms 103:8-9 NLT
Introduction:
Welcome to an amazing Sunday here at River of Faith! We are in week two of our brand new series I entitled "HisDaily Sufficient Grace." In this series we will learn about the true meaning of living by God's grace. We will see how big and wide the mercies of God is for us and how much we don't deserve the love and forgiveness He gave us! The word "grace" comes from the greek word "charis" which means "favor, blessing, or kindness." In scale of 1-10 how patient are you? Patience can be defined as a calm and enduring spirit especially when facing delays, trials, and suffering. Do you know that God is very patient with you?
Main Pointers:
“Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.” They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to bedestroyed, but wants everyone to repent.”
2 Peter 3:3-9 NLT
1. God is very patient because judgment is coming.
A. The devil would like us to think that God is behind. He wants us to forget what God had already done. He wants us to be distracted to think that something must be delaying God's promises. All of it is a lie.
B. Peter reminded us that God is always on time because he exists outside of time. He is not slow nor too far ahead. He's just being very patient for our sake because judgment is at hand.
C. “For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.”
2 Corinthians 5:10 NLT
2. God's patience is giving us very important time.
“But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has. promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness. And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight. And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.”
2 Peter 3:10-16 NLT
A. The judgement of God will be very severe. Everything will be destroyed and consumed with fire. There must be a sense of urgency for those who truly understand what is about to happen. An urgency to live godly lives.
B. God because of His long-suffering is giving us very important time. Time to repent and turn away from our wicked ways.
C. “The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” But Noah found favor with the Lord.”
Genesis 6:5-8 NLT
3. Don't just pick a side but secure your footing and stand firm until the end.
“You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing. Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.”
2 Peter 3:17-18 NLT
A. The devil will try everything to shake your foundations. He will try to move you and change your mind and those who are not careful may lose their secured footing.
B. Grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ. Live by faith in His daily sufficient grace.
C. “If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure."
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NLT
Conclusion:
If we think about all the foolishness that we have done and still we have come to the end of ourselves and find grace and forgiveness. That is all because God was very patient with us. In times of our rebellion He was not turned away. In times of our wickedness He remains patient. God is so full of grace that He waited for us even when we least deserved it.
