Opening Verse:
“God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.””
Exodus 3:12 NLT

Introduction:
Welcome to the River of Faith! Today we are in week seven of our series in the Book of Exodus.
In this series we will look at the foreshadowings of Christ foretold in one of the greatest stories ever written in the Old Testament. "Exodus" is defined as "departure " which marks the end of the period of oppression for Israelites in the land of Egypt and their deliverance through the leadership of Moses with the mighty hand of God in full display.

Main Pointers:
“When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord!” The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.” Exodus 32:1-6 NLT

1. Disobedience does not happen overnight.

A. Moses went up to the Mountain of God in mount Sinai to meet with God and receive the Lord’s commandments. God had already told Moses that he would be back in that mountain to worship but the its the opposite that happened again.
B. The people have grown very impatient and being left with their own evil desires they began to go back to what they were slaves from. Having a weak leader as Aaron did not help. Aaron saw that they were excited and started pleasing the people instead of God.
C. throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God —truly righteous and holy.”
Ephesians 4:22-24 NLT

2. We must not bow down to any idol.

“The Lord told Moses, “Quick! Go down the mountain! Your people whom you brought from the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down and sacrificed to it. They are saying, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.’” Then the Lord said, “I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are. Now leave me alone so my fierce anger can blaze against them, and I will destroy them. Then I will make you, Moses, into a great nation."
Exodus 32:7-10 NLT

A. God had already told the people not to create any idols. God is a jealous god he would not tolerate any rebellious ways and leave it unpunished.
B. “I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to anyone else, nor share my praise with carved idols.” Isaiah 42:8 NLT
C. “Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth. He had two horns like those of a
lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon. He exercised all the authority of the first beast. And he required all the earth and its people to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. He did astounding miracles, even making fire flash down to earth from the sky while everyone was watching. And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived all the people who belong to this world. He ordered the people to make a great statue of the first beast, who was fatally wounded and then came back to life. He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die.”
Revelation 13:11-15 NLT

3. A pure heart can move the heart of God.

“But Moses tried to pacify the Lord his God. “O Lord!” he said. “Why are you so angry with your own people whom you brought from the land of Egypt with such great power and such a strong hand? Why let the Egyptians say, ‘Their God rescued them with the evil intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth’? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you have threatened against your people! Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You bound yourself with an oath to them, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven. And I will give them all of this land that I have promised to your descendants, and they will possess it forever.’” So the Lord changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people. Then Moses turned and went down the mountain. He held in his hands the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. These tablets were God’s work; the words on them were written by God himself.”
Exodus 32:11-16 NLT

A. It is true that there is no changing the Lord’s mind once its complete and final but that’s not what Moses did. Moses simply reasoned with the Lord and because his heart was pure and sincere for the people God changed His actions. He brought judgment to the people but kept His promise to lead them to the Land.
B. “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Numbers 23:19 NLT

Conclusion:
Our journey in life is like the exodus of Israelites from Egypt. When God promises something we can trust that He will do it. But are we like the Israelites who constantly doubted God? Do smash down our idols and put God above all? Remember that God is a jealous god and we will not share His glory to any other. We must worship and bow down to God alone!
