Memory Verse:
“So Moses told the people of Israel what the Lord had said, but they refused to listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the brutality of their slavery.”
Exodus 6:9 NLT
Introduction:
Welcome to the River of Faith! Today we are in week two of our series in the Book of Exodus. In this series we will look at the foreshadowings of Christ foretold in one of the greatest stories in the Old Testament.
"Exodus" is defined as "departure " which marks the end of the period of oppression for Israelites in the land of Egypt and their deliverance through the leadership of Moses with the mighty hand of God!
Main Pointers:
“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pay close attention to this. I will make you seem like God to Pharaoh, and your brother, Aaron, will be your prophet. Tell Aaron everything I command you, and Aaron must command Pharaoh to let the people of Israel leave his country. But I will make Pharaoh’s heart stubborn so I can multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. Even then Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. So I will bring down my fist on Egypt. Then I will rescue my forces —my people, the Israelites—from the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment. When I raise my powerful hand and bring out the Israelites, the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three when they made their demands to Pharaoh.”
Exodus 7:1-5, 7 NLT
1. Even with pharaoh’s stubbornness the mighty hand of God was in full display.
A. After a lengthy conversation with God of how inadequate he was, Moses finally listened and obeyed. He went to Pharaoh and delivered the message. However, the pharaoh treated the Israelites with harsher punishment. The people become more discouraged.
B. God had already established His holiness to Moses in the burning bush and this time He was about to teach Him about His Mighty Hand.
C. “For the Scriptures say that God told Pharaoh, “I have appointed you for the very purpose of displaying my power in you and to spread my fame throughout the earth.” So you see, God chooses to show mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen.”
Romans 9:17-18 NLT
2. God’s anointing is always superior to the devil’s counterfeit.
“Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Pharaoh will demand, ‘Show me a miracle.’ When he does this, say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down in front of Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.’” So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the Lord had commanded them. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent! Then Pharaoh called in his own wise men and sorcerers, and these Egyptian magicians did the same thing with their magic. They threw down their staffs, which also became serpents! But then Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. Pharaoh’s heart, however, remained hard. He still refused to listen, just as the Lord had predicted.”
Exodus 7:8-13 NLT
A. Pharaoh was a god to the Egyptians but we all know that there is no one like the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This world will try to imitate what only God can do but it will always fall short.
B. Remember God was also teaching Moses about His power. Moses needed to recognize the difference between God’s anointing and the devil’s counterfeit.
C. “Pharaoh’s magicians tried to do the same thing with their secret arts, but this time they failed. And the gnats covered everyone, people and animals alike. “This is the finger of God!” the magicians exclaimed to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh’s heart remained hard. He wouldn’t listen to them, just as the Lord had predicted.”
Exodus 8:18-19 NLT
3. When telling pharaoh failed, God had to show him instead.
“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn, and he still refuses to let the people go. So go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes down to the river. Stand on the bank of the Nile and meet him there. Be sure to take along the staff that turned into a snake. Then announce to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you, “Let my people go, so they can worship me in the wilderness.” Until now, you have refused to listen to him. So this is what the Lord says: “I will show you that I am the Lord.” Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in my hand, and the river will turn to blood. The fish in it will die, and the river will stink. The Egyptians will not be able to drink any water from the Nile.’”
Exodus 7:14-18 NLT
A. There were about twenty references of pharaoh hardening his heart. Half of it was pharaoh doing it to himself and the other half God was hardening his heart.
B. This shows that God is all-knowing. He had already predicted that this will happen. He was only exposing the stubbornness of the heart while matching it with His power and might.
C. “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NLT
Conclusion:
Our journey in life is like the exodus of Israelites from Egypt. When God promises us something we can trust that He will do it. But do we recognize the hand of God in our lives? Can we tell the counterfeit from God’s real anointing? Even when we are stubborn and we refuse to believe God will do what He says He will do.
