Memory Verse:
“God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act.”
Exodus 2:24-25 NLT

Introduction:
Welcome to the River of Faith! Today we are starting a brand new series in the Book of Exodus. In this series we will look at the foreshadowings of the coming of Christ foretold in one of the most amazing stories in the the Old Testament. Thousands of years before Jesus came.
"Exodus" is defined as the "departure ". This marks the end of the period of oppression for Israelites in the land of Egypt and their deliverance through the leadership of Moses and the mighty hand of God!

Main Pointers:
“One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.” When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied. “Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.”
Exodus 3:1-6 NLT

1. God’s holiness was displayed in the burning bush.

A. This was the first time the word “holy” appeared the Scriptures. Holiness in its plain meaning means “set-apart.” Holiness involves separation which means there is no one else like God. God is set apart from everything He created.
B. Was it the ground itself that was holy? No, it was the presence of God that made it holy and God was about to teach Moses the major difference between what was divine and what was human.
C. “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Numbers 23:19 NLT

2. God in His glory also showed compassion for His people.

“Then the Lord told him, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land. It is a land flowing with milk and honey—the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live. Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them. Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.””
Exodus 3:7-10 NLT

A. Theophany is when God choose to manifest himself to His people in a visible form. God choose fire to reveal His glory to Moses. Fire purifies yet it did not consume shows the power of God matched with His unfailing love for His people.
B. In the burning bush God also showed His love and genuine concern for His people. This was the first time God called Israelites“My own people” and later gave a personal name to them. God is as intimate as He is mighty.
C. “I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.”
Psalms 40:1-3 NLT

3. God is eternal, He is unchangeable.

“But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.” But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors —the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.”
Exodus 3:11-15 NLT

A. The personal name God gave Moses (YAWEH) speaks of His eternal glory and unchangeable character. As we mentioned earlier that God is holy. He was to be set apart from all the gods of Egypt that’s why He gave them a personal name.
B. By saying that He is the “Great I Am” God had established to Moses that He alone is God. He always was, always is, and forever will be.
C. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” Revelation 22:13 NLT

Conclusion:
Our journey in this life is like the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. When we call God answers but when God answers we must respond with faith and complete trust in Him. Are we going to grumble and complain like the Israelites did or are we going trust Him like Moses trusted in the Lord.
