Part 3: "Neither Do I"
Opening Verse:
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.”
Matthew 7:1-2 NLT
Introduction:
Welcome to an amazing Sunday here at River of Faith! We are in week three of our new series entitled "His Daily Sufficient Grace." In this series we will learn about the true meaning of living by the grace of God. We will see how big and wide the mercies of God is and how much we don't deserve the love and forgiveness He gave us!
The word "grace" comes from the greek word "charis" which means "favor, blessing, or kindness." Have you ever passed judgment on someone? Passing judgment on someone is feeling the need of imposing our own standards or convictions to others as if its their job to live up to our expectations. More often when someone passes judgment it exposes more about themselves that the person they are judging.
Main Pointers:
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1-4 NLT
1. In Christ we are no longer defined by our sins.
A. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ means that when we surrender our lives to Christ we have been set free from guilt and shame of our sins.
B. As Paul says this was done by the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit. The law was supposed to made us aware if our sins but instead it made us even more sinful therefore God sent the ultimate sacrifice so that once and for all we can be forgiven of our sins.
C. “Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.” ----------
John 8:10-11 NLT
2. There is no more condemnation because Jesus lives in us.
“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”
Romans 8:5-11 NLT
A. The result of our genuine surrender to Jesus is we are no longer controlled by our sinful nature but by the Spirit of God. The sinful nature leads to death but the Spirit gives life.
B. “So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.”
Galatians 5:1 NLT
3. There is no more condemnation because we are now called children of God.
“Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.”
Romans 8:12-17 NLT
A. Unlike before that we cannot say no to sin now that the Spirit of God lives in us we are now counted as children of God! As children of God we received a spirit of power and not of fear and slavery to sin.
B. “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves."
Galatians 5:16 NLT
C. “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God."
Galatians 5:19-21 NLT
Conclusion:
Many today when they hear about their sins being called out get so offended and say "why are you judging me?" For a teacher to help you she has to know first what your reading level is. For a doctor to help you he has to tell you what bad habits you have to change. For a coach to help you improve he has to be honest with you. There is now no condemnation for those who belong to Jesus. God doesn't judge you. He already judged the sin in you so you can no longer be slave to sin. Jesus has set us free!
