Part 4: "Forgive Me so I Can!" - Matthew 18

Opening Verse:
“For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,”
Titus 2:11-12 NLT

Introduction:

Welcome to an amazing Sunday here at River of Faith! We are in week four of our new series entitled "His Daily Sufficient Grace." In this series we will learn about the true meaning of living by the grace of God. We will see how big and wide the mercies of God are and how much we don't deserve the love and forgiveness He gave us!

The word "grace" comes from the greek word "charis" which means "favor, blessing, or kindness." Have you ever received something that is free in your life? There's something that is just so pleasant when you receive something you don't have to pay for. It's humbling and very memorable at the same time. The kindness we receive should be the same kindness that we are willing to give. The question is do we?

Main Pointers:
“Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned— to pay the debt. “But the man fell down before his master and begged him, ‘Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’ Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt.”
Matthew 18:23-27 NLT

1. All of us have very heavy accounts that must be paid by a great price.

A. The main emphasis here was that the servant no matter what he does, he will not be able to pay the debt that he owes.
B. All of us, no matter how highly we think of ourselves have a very heavy account. If not for what God calls "grace" we will have to pay every single penny for the rest of eternity.
C. “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God."
Romans 14:12 NLT
D. God paid a high price for you, so don’t be enslaved by the world.”
1 Corinthians 7:23 NLT

2. The grace we received, is it the same grace we give?

“But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. “His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full.”
Matthew 18:28-30 NLT

A. The actions of the servant were outrageous! Anyone who hears what he's done has a right to be outraged. The question is are we any different?
B. “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”
Colossians 3:12-14 NLT

3. The real essence of God's grace is when we come to realization of how much we have been forgiven.

“When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”
Matthew 18:31-35 NLT

A. "Shouldn't you have mercy on your servant just as I have mercy on you?" The question of the King speaks volumes on how we should understand God's grace towards us.
B. “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 15:12-13 NLT

Conclusion:
We are the people of grace. We received it not by works but by the gift of GOD so that no one can boast. It's the same Grace that's been given to us should be the same grace that we give others. Gods grace is underserved. We should give grace to others even if we know they do not deserve it!
