Memory Verse:
“But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”
Isaiah 43:18-19 NLT
Introduction:
What a victorious celebration we had yesterday church! We thank God for the mighty 20 years the He has been with us! Today is a continuation and a powerful reminder that God does things anew! As we look forward to the next chapter and the next challenge God has in store for us it is important to be reminded God has made us anew! Our job is recognize this and be careful not to mix the old mindset and old habits with it.
Main Pointers:
“One day some people said to Jesus, “John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?” Jesus responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.” Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment. “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins. But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say."
Luke 5:33-39 NLT
1. The truth is many people practice religion but not many have a real relationship with God.
A. Obviously the Pharisees concerns were worldly. They don't really care about fasting but the attention they are getting for doing it.
B. We have to be careful church about false religiosity which is acting religious but really empty inside.
C. “They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!”
2 Timothy 3:5 NLT
2. Jesus was not about "patching up" old traditions but renewing lives.
“Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.”
Luke 5:36 NLT
A. The illustration Jesus spoke painted the picture for everyone to get the point clearly.
B. Everyone expects Him to act like the rest of the religious leaders pretending to be doing God's will. Jesus is God He came not to destroy old traditions but to fulfill them!
C. “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”
Matthew 5:17 NLT
3. When new is mixed with old it ruins both.
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins.”
Luke 5:37-38 NLT
A. Jesus is the very fulfillment of everything that is written in the law and the prophets. He did something greater that the law and prophets were not able to do. He showed us what the Father really like.
B. “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
John 13:34-35 NLT
Conclusion:
Love one another church! Church is not this building it's the people! So love this church! Put it as priority in everything that you do! Love the ministry and the services that we render unto God! God has built this church. Jesus is our solid foundation and not the gates of hell will conquer it!!!
